Presented by Doug Stone and Justin Anderson, MD.
Doug’s story is similar to that of many with Type 2 Diabetes. After 20 years of having the disease, he found himself with totally out of control blood sugars (hemoglobin A1c 11.3 and fasting blood sugars in the 490’s). And all this was DESPITE taking the MAXIMUM DOSE of 3 Diabetes Medications!
Luckily, Doug decided to take control of his health, and he has had an AMAZING turnaround! With the help of a local functional medicine physician, he began improving his inflammation and blood sugars. Then, 9 months ago he started the Metabolic Coaching LCHF diet. And look at these numbers!!!
DIABETES
Hemoglobin A1c – from 11.3 to 6.0!
Fasting Blood Sugars – from 490’s to 90-130
Diabetes Medications – from 3 (at max dose) to 0.5 (1/2 his metformin)
C-Peptide – from 5.3 to 2.3
Fasting Insulin – 10 (normal)
BLOOD PRESSURE
Blood pressure Medications – from 3 to 1
FATTY LIVER DISEASE
GGT (liver enzyme) – from 120 to 65
Triglycerides – from 490 to 112
INFLAMMATION
CRP – from 4.5 to 1.6
CHOLESTEROL
Total Cholesterol – from 196 to 169
HDL (GOOD) Cholesterol – from 35 to 48
Triglycerides – from 490 to 112
Weight
Below 300 for the first time since he was 25 years old!
Lost 46 pounds and counting!
HOW HE IS REVERSING HIS DIABETES?
OK, so how did Doug do it? How is he reversing his diabetes? 9 months ago he started the Metabolic Coaching program and began eating a Very Low Carbohydrate Ketogenic Diet (VLCKD). This is an LCHF (Low Carbohydrate, High Fat) diet. Doug keeps his daily net carbohydrate intake to LESS THAN 20 NET CARBS PER DAY.
Why less than 20 net carbs per day? Because Doug is what I call a “very metabolically resistant” client. If he goes about 20 net carbs daily, he finds that his blood sugar control and weight control suffer above 20. There are some people that can handle a little more net carbs. However, I have found that people who have struggled with weight since early in life, and those with type 2 diabetes, often need to reduce carbs to less than 20 net carbs daily to really “move the needle” and make progress towards getting off their diabetes medications and losing weight.
In addition to the health issues above, Doug suffered from HORRIBLE INFLAMMATION AND PAIN. “Before, I hurt all over. My joints hurt. I had pain in my body almost all the time. I was miserable. I couldn’t get up and down. It was just painful to do just ’normal’ stuff. And that improved with the (help of the local functional medicine doctor). But it’s even a lot better now!”
HOW DOES HE FEEL ON LCHF?
“The first thing that happened when I really got into what we call ketosis, or when your body starts burning fat for fuel instead of sugar, is that I’ve just felt FANTASTIC! And I have a lot of energy. And so that was worth everything, right there! All my inflammation went away. I didn’t hurt all the time.”
Although Doug has lost 46 pounds so far, weight loss has really become a secondary motivation for him. Why? Because he just feels so much better on a Very Low Carbohydrate Ketogenic Diet!
HAVE TYPE 2 DIABETES?
The COMPLICATIONS of diabetes are IRREVERSIBLE.
– Once you’ve had a heart attack, an amputation, or kidney failure from type 2 Diabetes, you can’t go back and just “undo” the damage.
However DIABETES itself IS REVERSIBLE
– By adopting a Low Carbohydrate High Fat Diet Doug has normalized almost all of his markers for diabetes, inflammation etc… This puts him at much lower risk of developing the complications of diabetes (heart attack, an amputation, kidney failure, blindness etc…).
– And, as the ADA states, each reduction in hemoglobin A1c reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by 45%.” So how does a reduction from 11.3 to 6.0 look for heart disease risk!
